As you enter the back yard the landscape transforms to accommodate the addition of contemporary architectural elements to the traditional home. Stone materials become more refined and the planting palette changes as well. The pool and patio have a direct relationship to the interior of the house not only through their adjacency but also with the planting; the glazed stairwell was planted with bamboo and this was echoed outside at the far side of the pool where there was a need for screening. As you step down off the pool patio you pass through a threshold maintained not only by the series of walls but also the canopies of birch trees.
